RE: Wondering if there are any "free" overnight places to stay

Flying J and some other truckstops allow overnight parking.
Some Walmarts permit it.
Cabelas has stores with dump stations and overnight parking.
Casinos are often an option.
Some states allow parking (but not camping) in rest stops - just keep the slides in and cook at the picnic area.
Sounds like you are taking a one-day trip to the beach. I would suggest looking about an hour east of SD for the overnight spot. Closer you get to the coast the more likely there will be local community restrictions. You will not have access to a dump station in many cases but I think there are truckstops with dumps on the return to Phoenix.
You want to wake early in the morning to drive the rest of the way, and you could then do the breakfast at the beach.
We do one-days to our beach area but do not need to find an overnight. A friend does have some way to stay in a rest area on Friday nights to get an early Saturday start on the beach.
Never thought about a quick run to the beach on the West Coast. We have relatives in Phoenix so maybe will explore this on my own later.
Good luck.

RE: Northstar Debuts U.S. Escape Pod

Flat-bed campers do look like the way to go. For years now I have had the BiMobil campers - BiMobil - made in Germany bookmarked on my computer. Periodically I look at their models and hope to see the same in the US some day. Seems so much more practical than the slip-ins we have here.

RE: Who has started their T'day meal?

My turkey has been thawing in the downstairs refrigerator. My wife won't let me do anything unusual with the turkey -- she insists only on traditional from the oven. I will be brining this year; left too little time to do that last year.

RE: looking for an apple crisp recipe

Just enter "apple crisp recipe" in Google and you will have your choice. I usually read three or four recipes to see what differences might be possible and then create a "blended" recipe of the best ideas.

RE: Wooohooo! Just ordered an Outfitter!

We stopped at the factory for a look during a visit with relatives in Denver. I really like the Outfitter, especially the promise that you can keep it warm in cold weather conditions.
Not ready to go that route yet, but maybe some day.
Enjoy yours, I think you made a wise choice.

RE: The price of a New Truck ?

Now is the best opportunity in years to buy a large pick-up. The MSRP is history. Offer the dealer half of the list price and then bargain slowly up from that. Bet you will get some attention even at that price.

RE: FOLLOW-UP to Price to replace all fluids @ 30K

Ck the owners manual for replacement periods on fluids.
At 30,000 miles, you would need oil/filter/lube, antifreeze change, perhaps auto trans service. Differential fluids and brake fluid would probably not be recommended at this point. The needed services could be done at an express lube while you are on the road instead of using the dealer now.
This summer I stopped in a Wal-Mart for the oil change service while on the road. It was all done while we shopped for groceries and other items needed for that week.

Another Community Considers Controls on RVs

Another community is considering controls on RVers who "loiter" in their jurisdiction. Seems to extend to public and private land so it would also mean that Wal-Mart stop-overs could be affected as well. Don't know how many real problems there are - the leaking sewer pipe on one unit would be a problem that should be addressed - but bet the final wording will go far beyond controlling the troublesome violators.

Tillicum Beach CG in the Suislaw National Forest (south of Waldport) has sites on a cliff above the beach. Beachside sites are the ones away from US101. Great place to camp and explore from.

RE: VA State Parks in November?

We stayed at First Landing SP during Nov one year. Really depends on the weather. Sunny and warm makes an OK trip but it can be rather cold during Nov. I consider Sept - Oct the peak months for VA and then it tapers off.
In spring, beach camping would be OK but the water does not warm up that much until June. May and June are very good camping months generally; some of the winter cold may still persist in April.
I just checked one of the weather forecast. Today in W-B is supposed to be 60 high and 34 low. In Arlington, the range is 63 - 47. Looks like the VA low is probably a bit better, and that will last in Nov.'
Suggestion - make plans but don't make any reservations that you can't cancel. If parks are open, there will be room for you in Nov.
Another suggestion - look at Cape Henlopen SP in Lewes, DE. It combines history and scenery. There are outlet malls if the weather is not that good.

RE: Lookin for help to run a/c on a 20A home circuit

Even when I plug in the AC using my regular cord plus a dogbone adapter, the circuit will trip. My 13,500 AC uses 26 amps at startup so only a 30-amp circuit will work.

RE: Our evaluation: Cowan`s Gap State Park, PA

Spent last weekend at Hickory Run State Park in Northeast PA. PA has some great state park locations and this proved to be another one of them.
As you noted, access to the campground can be a problem. For Hickory Run, the problem was the "highway" into the park and camping area. At one point there was a 14% downhill grade that included one turn marked at 15 MPH. Once there it was a great campground with lots of families spending a beautiful fall weekend.

The Coleman sheet-metal toaster setup that allows you to toast four slices - It looks a little rickety but does a tremendous job of toasting bread without electricity.

Simple solution to the problem. Take care about putting a filing cabinet in the slideout. With lots of paper, weight on the slide system could be an issue.

RE: snakes,, NOT pets

Use the snake repellent around your own house. I would be afraid some would look for another place to winter over. Protect yourself first; don't try to get your neighbor to do it all.
Snakes eat live food, mostly rodents, so dog food is not something they are interested in.
